  • Honors Ira Hayes, World War II hero
  • Gilding suggests his heroism, beyond personal struggles

Ira Hayes, a member of the Akimel O'odham tribe and U.S. Marine, was immortalized in the World War II photograph of his Iwo Jima flag-raising. Uneasy with his sudden celebrity, Hayes suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism. Here, Diego Romero separates Hayes from his much-publicized inner turmoil, urging viewers never to forget Hayes' heroic accomplishments.
