This porcelain tureen is molded in the form of a crab. Charmingly, the crab has movable eyes and appears to be feeding itself with one of its large claws. Although the crab is realistically moulded, the decoration is fantastical - a colorful brocade pattern with pinwheel rosettes in deep iron-red, brown, and pink enamels, further highlighted with gold. Made by Chinese potters for export to the West, this sauce tureen would have been a sumptuous, amusing, and functional addition to a highly fashionable dining table in 18th century Europe. Rare Chinese porcelain soup tureen in the form of a crab. The realistically molded orange and gilt decorated crab with movable eyes, molded on a famille rose base with floral decorations and puce and gilt floral border. Puce flowers inside of lid.
