de slad eijmoij
Chinese export blue and white historical charger, ca. 1680-1720. Painted over the entire surface with a birds-eye view of a port with the inscription de slad eijmoij. The unusual decoration on this charger documents the early Dutch involvement in China. The inscription "De slad Eijmoeij" seems to be a phonetic misspelling of the Dutch words "the city [Amoy]". The view of Amoy [Xiamen] does not display any European presence, but the port proved important in the attempts to establish a permanent foothold for trade on the Chinese mainland.
