This porcelain armorial plate is decorated wth the Arms of Dobree. When ordering a service of Chinese armorial porcelain, European noble families sent bookplates decorated with their coat of arms to Chinese enamellers to copy. The Englishman who ordered this service annotated his bookplate with color guidelines, rather than painting them in. The Chinese enamellers, who couldn't read English, assumed the color guidelines of "red" and "green" were part of the decoration, like the family motto in Latin, and included them.
