Octant owned by Revolutionary War privateersman Joseph Peabody with ebony frame, radius 14 5/8". Name plate ivory marked "Joseph. Peabody. 1778" Limb ebony. Scale ivory graduated -5 degrees to 95 degrees by 1 degree subdivided to 20'. Flat ebony index arm, with brass end and brass arm stop. Ivory vernier type A, reading to 1'. Adjsutable index mirror with two removable shades. Horizon glass with lever adjustment and shades from index mirror. Sight vane double peep with pivoted cover. Back sight with single peep. Back horizon with lever adjustment. Ivory note plate on back of frame, pencil hole in brace. Modern mahogany box with brass plate "Joseph Peabody Esq. Salem 1778"
