This is a head ornament for a shaman's headdress. It is made from a nearly oblong piece of wood. At the bottom is a straw wrapped circle of wire to keep the ornament upright on the wearer's head. There are twelve locks of hair at the back and top. The ornament is carved to represent a totem face and is painted with blue, black and red.
