Effigy bottle, about 1800 Ceramic Peru Gift of S. Page, 1827-29 E6812 Effigy vessels incorporate animal or human shapes. People who lived in the Santa River region were the first to create this type of vessel in Peru.


East India Marine Society Collection


This is an effigy bottle. The bottom neck of the bottle is shaped like the face of a man. His arms and hands are in relief. The vessel's handle is on the other side of the neck from the man's head. The top half of the body of the bottle is ornamented with broad rows of raised dots.
