Club Wood Tonga Gift of Captain William Putnam Richardson, 1812 E4841 The people of Tonga used the inverted trunks of small saplings to make root-stock clubs like this one, with its characteristic incised geometric patterns.


East India Marine Society Collection


This is a root stock club made from the inverted trunk of a small sapling. It is ornamented with four groups of ridges. There is a lug at the end of the handle.
