U'u (club) Wood Marquesas Islands Gift of Captain Benjamin Vanderford, before 1821 E5031 Marquesans carved clubs like this one for display as well as warfare. Its head is a flattened double-sided face with prominent eyes, which are composed of smaller faces. The curved carving at the large end resembles Marquesan tattoo motifs. A club of this type may feature up to 14 faces.

DESCRIPTION

This is a dark wooden, carved and incised club. The head of the club is a flattened double-sided face with prominent eyes. These eyes are composed of smaller faces. The curved carving at the large end of the club resembles Marquesan tattoo motifs.
